Scam Alert-beware Of Person Stating He Is Curt Newbury

My daughter, Cathryn, with my permission, signed on with Star Search Casting last week in the hopes of furthering her modeling career. She was contacted around 9pm via AIM on April 3, by someone claiming to be Curt Newbury. She called me immediately and told me that Curt Newbury had contacted her asking if she was available for modeling work. I found it skeptical that he was calling so late so I told her to give Mr. Newbury my phone number and I would speak with him tomorrow. This Mr. Newbury was presenting this situation as urgent, instilling the notion that he would seek another person if she didn't have time. She told him that her mother wanted his number so she could call him tomorrow. He told my daughter in no uncertain terms that he did NOT want her mother involved and only wanted to speak with her and no one else. I am no longer skeptical; I am now incensed. and quite certain this “Mr. Newbury” is not only a predator but he is using someone else’s identity to lure young girls. I have spoken to the real Curt Newbury at length and I am certain the person who called was not him but a predator. Below is the transcript:

How Can You Tell A Reputible Talent Agency?

I have received an email from a company, that I do not want to mention at the moment, in response to an audition I applied for. This is for a well known chain store, print and tv work.

They seem legitimate, and are registered in California with most talent agencies, they also have a very nice website (not that means they are legit).

However, on checking online, I have noticed that they have received a number of very bad reviews, along with some positive rebuttals from some people who have this company as their agent.

My first thought on seeing the negative reviews, was that they were disgruntled stage mums. That was what my gut was telling me.

How can I find out for sure, before having to spend a lot of money to fly out to meet this company, prior to auditioning? I am new to this country, and so do not know where to go to look, apart from a basic google search

Thanks in advance.
Marianne

PS.. I checked and I do not see them listed under any of the agencies on this site... of course that in and of itself means nothing.

I got a message from a Michael saying he liked my looks. He later called me and asked what I'd assume are typical questions, like height, weight, clothing size, etc... He asked what modeling I was willing to do. When I said lingerie, swimsuit, and any nudity made me uncomfortable, he said that to be a model I would have to. Today he asked me if I was somewhere where I could answer personal questions. That made me uncomfortable. He also told me not to tell my parents about what he said about me needing to step out of my comfort zone and try nude and swimsuit. Is he legit or not?
Ladies...I am letting you all know, that if you receive a message or an email from a Michael or whatever name they are using, and he says that he works for an ad agency that has quite a bit of work going on, don't believe it. Victoria Secret, Fredericks, Macy's, Ford Motors, etc. are only a few people he had accounts with. When you do give him a phone # to call you, he will ask you very, and I mean very personal questions. Like what are your breasts like...how large is your nipple, what would it take to get your nipple erect, he goes on and on. Nobody should ask you questions like that...ever. There was no mention of an audition. It sounds like he was getting his rocks off while asking. Don't believe this so-called ad agency.

Attention to all yound ACTORS, MODELS, and ENTERTAINERS!!! I actually found this man named Taylor Hayden on this site Star Search Casting and he contacted me via email. Its was 2 years ago and he seemed very sincere and legitimate as first. We met at a Starbucks to discusss his current projects and he said he would pay me and give me copies of my credits when the features were finished. He hired me as a lead actress for 4 movies. When we started shooting for the first time, he was extremely unprofessional, had no crew, and no real script, but he assured me that it was in the works. He only had a mini digital camera that you could by at any store and he was by himself. The script was hand-written on notebook paper and not a real script. He wrote the script as we went on. He seemed a nice guy and assured me he needed the experience as a filmmaker, so I did it more as a favor. I went with someone to shoot at his apartment a scene and I then figured out he was a NUT! He had weird things all over his apartment, he talked to himself, and had this weird camera outside his door to monitor anyone comming up to his door, but gave this convincing long drawn out story as to why his apartment looked like this. He refuses to give me copies of my credits or pay me. I had my agent and former publicist contact him and he refuses to return calls. He started harassing me and became threatening. He said someone had slashed his tires and broke his window, which tuned out to be a former actor he also conned on a previous production. Needless to say, he scamed me and I did 4 films for nothing. He told me if I want copies of my credits, I would have to pay him $70.00 for each copy. He also does wedding photography and scammed this couple in Dallas Texas for their wedding photos they paid him for up front and he took off with their money. He scammed many people actually in this wedding photography. He can be seen numerous times on RIP OFF REPORTS. Here is his website below. PLEASE BEWARE OF THIS GUY. He is from Dallas Texas originally and is a so-called fake filmmaker that does these movies to get women and make friends. There are tons of conartists like this all over Hollywood!
Ok so I Signed up with this site Instantcast and they had a listing for a orange juice commercial. Which I submitted for and got it without even auditioning all I did was send in my pictures. They wanted me to pay a fee for the production shoot which was $75.00. Then they send me another email saying that the fee went down to $45.00. I didn't pay anything so instead they just want me to send them another picture of myself for an ad. There's no commercial just an ad what is going on here can anybody give me some advice?

There are no plans to shoot in NM. And there are no auditions scheduled there. Also, casting directors do not send out fliers or postcards in the mail for these types of announcements. They simply issue a press release in the area, contact the local film commission, or hire a local casting director. Usually these types of things (that you received in the mail) involve a scam of some sort. They set up "auditions", or a "Casting Call" and then get all sorts of people coming in and perform an "audition". Then they give you the hard sell on acting classes or some other scam. People like that infuriate me. I myself have fallen for this type of "audition" when I first started acting in LA and had no agent. That is why it is so important to have a legit SAG franchised or ATA signatory agent.

For those who applied to this advert you may have noticed that the advert pasted below, has been changed slightly. This gentleman initially stated he wanted all ethniciteis, so I decided to apply. I immediately received a reply by email, and a gentleman by the name of "Don Peterson" left his number and asked me to call him. I decided to call him using a GO phone (Cellphone). I spoke to the gentleman who said everything about his company except for the offer he had advertised on starsearch. He told me how it was worth millions and millions of dollars worth ......... At this point I was so bored and cut him short by asking him what kind of Modeling opportunities did they have to offer as advertised.........sorry folks.... we were getting no where. Towards the end is when he came to the point that he was asking me if we could meet first and then perhaps discuss what opportunities he could offer. I hung up on him, however if any of you receive email that has "Regency Properties" on it Beware!!!
That was the downside of exposure the upside however, is upgrading to "Daimond satus " has accelerated my exposure. I have received tons of responses to cast for Movies ,Fashion Shows,Reality TV and sign up with Bona Fide Top modeling agencies in New York and LA. I am getting ready to go to the "big apple." So if you feel that nothing is happening yet maybe you should consider upgrading......honestly I know, becasue I was bronze for several weeks and not much happened then. Good luck!!!

John Robert Powers

Recently, I was accepted to John Robert Powers. I, frankly, didn't know what to expect, what with my new introduction to the business. I have a rather interesting story, so here we go:)

I attend Thomas Jefferson HS for Science and Technology. I have a two hour long bus rides home so I usually zone out after my friends are gone, but I was reading a book. I'd been interested in the business for a while, so I was on the lookout for a radio commercial for Disney auditions, when suddenly BAM one came on the radio. It asked if you were interested and wanted to meet Linda Henrie, the supposed mother of David Henrie from Wizards of Waverly Place. It claimed that it was a simple auditioning process, etc, etc. So of course I was interested.

I got home and asked my mom if she would call and within 10 minutes, I had an audition in Rockville, MD. On the following Thursday, I arrive at the address, dressed appropriately and looking amazing. I walk into John Robert Powers, where after filling out forms, the entire group of 50 kids and their parents were introduced to Allana Knowles, a pre-caster. She walks us through the steps of becoming and actor and then picks a few promising kids to step up in front of everybody (including me. I was nervousss but really good:) to perform an impromptu skit.

After the inspiring talk, we head to the interview room. I end up meeting Mrs. Knowles for mine and she asks me to sing. So I sing the first few lines of the National Anthem and she is blown away. She practically offers me a callback for the next day and I take it. We do a run-through for a commercial and I didn't even need to look at the script during filming!

The next day, we meet for maybe 20 minutes tops and Mrs. Knowles gets us to sign away $3000 for classes. That's where it got interesting. Not only was Linda Henrie missing, they wanted us to give them money? But I took the classes. Hey, I still want some training. Their price range was from $2000 to $10000, I believe. It's all in their booklet that was given to us at the door. So after signing the contract, I get to cut in line to meet Dede Binder (another caster for Disney, they claimed) and auditioned with her for no apparent job. I did some research and Dede Binder IS a talent agent, so I was pretty happy about that.

So long story short, is John Robert Powers a scam or just another school?
And I still haven't met Linda Henrie to this day:(

Nigerian Scams Reach Epidemic Proportions!

Online schemes operating out of Nigeria that have defrauded victims out of tens of millions of dollars have become so pervasive that the U.S. government has given the West African country until November to take steps to decrease such crimes or face sanctions.

Financial fraud is now reportedly one of the three largest industries in Nigeria, where the anonymity of the Internet is being used to give crime syndicates a windfall.

In 1980 the US Secret Service took a proactive approach to combating Nigerian organized crime by establishing and maintaining task forces throughout the United States whose main focus was the investigation of financial fraud committed by Nigerian nationals and their accomplices.

Membership in these task forces included representatives from the United States Customs Service, Nigerian Crime Initiative (NCI), the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Nigerian Organized Crime Task Force (INOCTF), the United States Postal Inspection Service, U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Nigerian National Police (NNP), the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of State's Bureau of Diplomatic Security, bank investigators from the private sector, as well as numerous state and local law enforcement agencies and other Nigerian federal law enforcement agencies. This diverse membership is indicative of the multitude of crimes being perpetrated by Nigerian criminals.

Other Concerns With Scams

With all of the scams out there it's hard to know who is legit or not.

But, there is one other concern to be aware of.... Dangerous people!

Not trying to scare anyone but you have to be aware of false postings or ads that lure children and women (even men) to locations for things other than modeling or whatever they are posting for. Too many people have disappeared or been found (you know what I mean) and trust me when I say; these types are out there just waiting for the right opportunity.

If you are a parent of a child looking to get into modeling or acting, please be responsible and monitor your child's emails, instant messages or even control their accounts for their profiles. Thoroughly check out ALL persons or companies that may contact you or your child. You can even check with your local police department on the legitimacy of the individual or company. NEVER allow your child to go anywhere to meet anyone alone and don't go by yourself either.

Always take a couple of friends or boyfriend/husband and meet in a public place such as a restaurant, or even in front of the police station.

If they are on the up and up, they won’t mind.

Remember, there are sick people out there and it's SAFETY first!!
These Scammers are managing to show what appears to be U.K
Telephone numbers in their scams!

Every time I see one of these Scams from people pretending to be operating in the U.K
The confusing part is that they show what seems to be a UK telephone number as they all
Have the U.K +44 or 044 Start to the numbers, which is in fact correct for the U.K.

Well it seems that numbers starting like this 04470 or +4470 are in fact
U.K 070 Series which is a monthly ‘Premium Rate’ service
(Charging up to £2 per Minute + Network charges)
They Divert the caller to a hidden number usually somewhere like:
KENYA! NIGERIA or WHEREVER!
Again note the following:
The +4470 Number which I spoke of above (A Money Making Re-Direct!

Fabulous Flashcast - Www.fabulousflashcast.com

I didn't write this but I found it so I thought people would be interested:

I contacted http://www.fabulousflashcast.com after I saw their casting call posted on another site. Then I started doing some digging and found a lot of bad information about them. They used to have a website called http://www.flashcastkids.com but scammed a lot of people so they changed their site to http://www.fabulousflashcast.com. Flashcast still post fake Auditions all over the web on places like craigslist. The Better Business Bureau gives them an 'F' rating which is the lowest possible score. This is what the BBB said about Flashcast:

'On December 18, 2001, we were advised by the company that they would no longer respond to the complaints presented by the Bureau.

On July 24, 2001, the Los Angeles City Attorney filed a 14 count misdemeanor action against the company and its principal, Carl Carranza. The complaint alleged in part, that the defendants made misleading statements in print ads, verbally, and on their website.

On May 17, 2002, Flashcast, and its principal, Carl Carranza, were convicted of 10 counts of using false and misleading advertising in violation of the California Business & Professions code. The company and Mr. Carranza were placed on probation for 36 months and ordered to pay a fine of $4,050.00. They were also ordered to include a statement listing any fees charged, including monthly fees, in all of their advertisements. Anyone seeing an ad that does not contain the fee information is asked to contact Mark Lambert, Deputy Los Angeles City Attorney at (213) 978-8070.

This is their address:
Fabulous Flashcast
3575 Cahuenga Blvd West, Suite 120
Universal City, CA 90068
(323) 969-9006

Has anyone else dealt with this company?

Here are some things I found in google:

1. Business Owner Carl Ken Carranza and his Universal City-based company Flashcast were convicted last week on 10 counts of false advertising and could face a total of $60,000 in fees and up to five years of jail time. Sentencing will take place on June 19. To read more go here: http://www.allbusiness.com/services/amusem.../4380114-1.html

2. I worked for Flashcast almost ten years ago and I'm shocked by the fact that they are still in business. We were told to lie to potential clients and when they were called back because their child was 'cute' (ALL WERE CALLED BACK!), the head 'Casting Director' would tell the parents that they were auditioning for Huggies, Pampers, and other well-known companies even though they were not. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/093/...3945.htm#126469

3. Carl Carranza, Flashcast Kids and Flashcast Companies, Inc. has stooped to fraud and deception again. One would have thought Carranza learned his lesson after being convicted on May 17, 2002 of 10 counts of fraud and false and misleading advertising, and was forced to pay thousands in fines (he was also sentenced to three years probation). to read more go to: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/105/RipOff0105343.htm

4. They advertise what looks like an audition in the industry and then they sell what they call their 'computerized casting service.' So you go there, you audition, they don't tell you about a fee. Then if you're called back (everyone gets called back if Carl Carranza thinks he can get money out of them), they tell you at that point that you have to make your decision right then. There's an initial fee of around $495, and you're obligated for the next two years to send them 20 photos, plus a $50-a-month fee. That's $1,200 over two years, plus the initial $500 registration, plus the cost of 20 photos per month. to read more go here: http://www.allbusiness.com/services/amusem.../4380693-1.html

5. The case against Flashcast Entertainment is based on a 14-count complaint against owner Carl Ken Carranza and Deborah Elton Haugen charging them of being an unlawful job-listing service as well as falsely advertising in the LA Weekly and on the company's own website, www.flashcastkids.com & www.FabulousFlashcast.com. To read more go here: http://www.easybackgroundcheck.com/news/10.html

6. I recently signed with Flashcast and parted with $1500 in order to do so. These fraudsters need to be stopped! To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/232/RipOff0232900.htm

7. They kept her mighty busy with more compliments and questions and fake interest, to keep her from reading all of their safety net legal stuff and small print. After signing away her life, she was asked for her identification and credit card for "verification purposes". These people will tell you anything to get your money. To read more go here: http://www.pissedconsumer.com/consumer-rev...7040897697.html

8. On top of paying $1500 and still no modeling jobs not even one, my daughter has worked with other companies and clothing lines where they have never asked for a dime. Carl Carranza and Fabolous Flashcast are total scammers. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/260/RipOff0260231.htm

9. Company works from a very official looking office in LA in not a bad area and goes to every length to convince clients that everything is legit. Suspicion is raised by the mountain of very similar looking referral letters printed in the same font almost and the robotic but convincing sales pitch of two employees. Carl Carranza posts fake success stories all over the web trying to build credibility for himself. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/032/RipOff0032559.htm

10. Hard to believe that Carl Carranza and Fabolous Flashcast / Flashcast Kids are still in business, despite the numerous warnings on the Internet and the convictions for FRAUD. Carl Carranza has mastered the art of lying to your face to get your money. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/090/RipOff0090062.htm

12. We are recent victims of his fraudulent practice and are filing a case against him. Mr. Carranza's scams include illegal advance fee requests, pretense for being a legitimate practice, and use of hardball sales and emotional tactics to acquire money from intelligent and innocent parents. Carl Carranza and needs to be shut down for good. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/132/RipOff0132815.htm

13. Then, we were asked to meet with the CEO and he was very positive about the kids. He then goes through what the company does and talks quickly about a fee of $1500.
16. Don't pay Fabulous Flashcast - http://www.fabulousflashcast.com anything! They are a complete scam company who posts fake modeling jobs for kids in order to get your money! Just do a check on craigs list and you will find they post the same fake auditions over and over.
19. Because of the nature of their business, they can say anything they want, and blame their lack of performance and unfulfilled promises on the industry, your child, etc., and hide behind their small print. 21. Flashcast cunningly fools eager parents into believing that their kids might be future stars and commands a large fee upfront. Company is allegedly trying to find modeling work for clients babies and commands a large fee up front. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/032/RipOff0032559.htm

22. I was also scammed. I paid $1500.00 almost a year ago and have only had one casting call that wasn't even for babies! To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/001/...1927.htm#208336

23. This company is a total rip-off. Yes, something has to be done, to keep other parents from being deceived. They pretend to be a legitimate company but they are far from being a true casting company. I too have been riped off. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/093/RipOff0093945.htm

24. I have been working for Carl Carranza for many years. It is very difficult when we were ordered to give the customer misleading information just to get them to sign the contract. Of course to keep our job we had to do what we had to do. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/093/...93945.htm#58065
25. I hope you can contact me regarding the jerk Carl Carranza. I will be taking him to small claims court and was wondering if you could be of any assistance to me. Carl has ripped off one too many parents. 26. Convicted criminal and CEO of Fabulous Flashcast ( http://www.FabulousFlashcast.com ) Carl Carranza is still scamming hopeful parents who want to get their kids into modeling.
27. Carl Carranza and Debra were very nice in all of the pre-contract meetings (even though Carl reminded me of a smarmy car salesman), but once I signed the paper I was like the invisible woman and they would never return my calls.
28. Carl Carranza is a crook. He's been convicted of fraud and false advertising, he's violated court orders by weaseling around his responsibility to advertise his prices by using third-party websites to sell his services. He's lied as to how long Flashcast has been in business. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/105/...05343.htm#69801
30. Late last month, he filed complaints against two Los Angeles County companies, claiming they were illegally doing business in the entertainment industry. One, Flashcast Companies Inc. 31. Be careful, they are a serious scam. They have you pay, then stick your kid's file in a drawer doing nothing for the child until you complain. To read more go here: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Careers-Acting-...9/f_4696878.htm

32.Half of their site is dedicated to telling you that everyone from the Better Business Bureau to Rip-off Report is also a scam. Fabulous Flashcast attacks anyone who reveals their scam. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/346/RipOff0346190.htm

33.Beware of Mr. Carl Carranza's child modeling scam. We are recent victims of his fraudulent practice and are filing a case against him. Mr. Carranza's scams include illegal advance fee requests, pretense for being a legitimate practice, and use of hardball sales and emotional tactics to acquire money from intelligent and innocent parents. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/132/RipOff0132815.htm

34. The specific things that they say they will do are:(1) help you get an agent for your child (2) help you post your child on a casting website and (3) 'guide' you as a newcomer to the world of baby/kids modeling. My problem with Flashcast is that they barely do those few things for you, if they do anything at all - and for $1500 I expected a lot more. In fact there are many casting sites I can enroll on myself, I can search for my own agent, and I can read the endless information on the web about how to get into the entertainment business all by myself and save $1500! To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/232/RipOff0232900.htm

This is an example of the fake auditions they post all over the web. The first thing that tips you off about this scam is when they say "Stable Parents! Financial stability is a must!". Hmm sounds like they want people who can pay them a lot of money!

Flashcast posts casting calls like this all over the web:

this was the first email sent

It's been brought to the awarenes of our client that a
model has been approved. I have goods news, as I was
reharsing with my other models for our performance at
the "African Fashion Show" this one of our work
(http://www.africa-ata.org/affas.htm) in Africa, I was
informed by our client that part payment will be sent
out payment in a U.S certified check to you
tomorrow, unfortunately I won't be able to cash out
the certified bank cheque as my bank is not familiar
with US certified bank check and its not a accepted
payment here at the avenue of this Show in Africa,
since it's a US payment instrument, therefore the
certified bank cheque of ( $4,000 ) will be send to
you, when you receive the certified bank check , cash
them at your bank deduct your part payment of $1,000
then i will advice you on what to do with the
remaining money. Your balance of $500 will be payed in
cash immediately after the shooting, I'm looking up
online for a photographers studio for the shooting , I
will let you know the name and address of the studio
as soon as i get a perfect one. I hope you understand
