In Her Shoes: It’s Never Too Late!

While it's true that most professional ballet dancers begin taking dance lessons as small children, that doesn't mean that you can't have a successful professional career if you get a late start. Did you know that Martha Graham (1894-1991), one of the greatest dancers of our time didn't begin dancing until her late teens? She went on to become the first dancer to perform at The White House and had an amazing seventy-year career as a dancer and choreographer! She was probably one of the most resilient performers in our history. Even after failing health and hospitalization in 1972, she not only recovered, but also choreographed ten new ballets. We could all learn quite a few lessons from Martha Graham!
If you don't necessarily relate to Martha Graham, then maybe Vanessa Sah's story will inspire you. Vanessa is a member of Anaheim Ballet, the resident ballet company for the City of Anaheim. Unlike many of the other dancers in the company Vanessa didn't begin taking ballet classes until she was in college. But despite her late start, her dance career is really taking off!
When Vanessa first began taking ballet, she quickly fell in love with it because she enjoyed the challenge and the level of concentration required to perfect the movement. It became even more of a challenge when she went on pointe, but she stuck with it and now exhibits the same skill and grace as dancers who have been dancing for much longer than she has. Vanessa advises that dancers who are considering taking ballet as an adult should go for it. She describes her own experience with dancing as uplifting, enhancing and enriching.
You can view a profile of Vanessa Sah and other dancers from the Anaheim Ballet company on the weekly video podcast, Anaheim Ballet: More Than Dance. In addition to profiling up and coming members of Anaheim Ballet, the video podcast also demonstrates dance techniques and answers questions that young dancers often have such as, When is the right time to go on pointe?
You can also talk to other Star Search Casting members who are already taking ballet classes, or considering taking them. Just visit our community forum at http://www.StarSearchCasting.com and post your ballet related questions and comments to get feedback and insight from other dancers on our website.
And when you're ready, don't forget to check out our dance auditions! Good luck!

Scam Watch – Have You Received Email From A Nigerian Scammer?

You may have read recently on our website about the rise in Nigerian-based internet scams. It has become an international problem of epic proportions and the number of people affected is staggering. While the Nigerian government has vowed to investigate internet crimes that originate in the country, the problem steadily grows.
Most recently, we discovered that an individual using the name Frederick Ray is involved in recent email scams targeting aspiring models. He's been sending the following message:
"Hello there, i'm mr Fredrick Ray of Unique ultimate Modelling Company we would like to offer you a shoot in UNITED KINGDOM, please email for more information about the shoots at standoutster@gmail.com, hope to hear from you soon..
Regards,
F.Ray"
Upon investigation we determined that Frederick Ray's IP address was 195.166.237.42. And while he claimed to be a modeling agent in the UK, by tracing his IP address we were able to confirm that he was actually emailing models from Nigeria.
An IP address (Internet Protocol Address) is most simply defined as a computer's address. If you use Gmail, Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail, you can easily display the IP address of email senders by choosing the advanced options in your email settings. Simply explore your FAQs to learn more.
For example, if you're a Yahoo! Mail user, simply click on Options in the top-right corner and then select General Preferences. If you scroll down, you'll see an option to "Show all headers on incoming messages." Select that option and then click Save. Once you return to your inbox and review any of the messages you've received, you will be able to view the IP address of the senders.
Once you located the IP address, you can use a free IP address tracking program on the web to trace the address and determine where the sender is emailing you from. You can find these programs easily by searching for them using Google. If you track an IP address and you discover that the sender is emailing you from Nigeria, do not respond to any current or future email correspondence from that sender.
For more information on scams targeting aspiring models, singers, actors and dancers, log on each week to http://www.StarSearchCasting.com and review our Scam Watch. We're committed to keeping you informed!

HOLLYWOOD – In addition to helping unsigned talent secure some of the industry's most coveted opportunities, Star Search Casting (www.StarSearchCasting.com) also helps aspiring performers get signed to prominent talent agencies in Hollywood and in other regions of the United States. Star Search Casting maintains a comprehensive database of reputable talent agencies and managers that members can use as a resource. But more importantly, Star Search Casting attracts top agents and managers from all over the country looking for new talent to represent. Each day agents and managers log on to Star Search Casting to search for the most talented new dancers, singers, models and actors and it's paying off for many of them.
It's the dream of every actor, dancer, singer and model to get signed to a major talent agency in order to advance their careers. In a business that's often driven by "who you know", talent agents with established connections and relationships can be key in helping aspiring entertainers get their big break in the industry.
"We have tons of agents in our online database that represent actors, dancers, singers and models all over the world," says Jonathan Parker, CEO and founder of Star Search Casting. "While we encourage our members to submit their headshots and resumes to talent agents and managers, we also make sure that our website is being visited consistently by industry decision makers to increase our members' chances of being discovered and signed."
Although submitting a headshot and resume to a list of agents is the customary strategy used in the industry to get an agent, the reality is that many of these headshots may not be viewed for months or at all. By allowing members to create a profile on Star Search Casting, the website gives singers, dancers, actors and models a competitive edge and a greater chance of being seen by talent agents and managers, which is a huge benefit of joining the site.
Lacey Caudill of California is just one of the many Star Search Casting members who have been signed to an agency thanks to Star Search Casting. She was recently signed to Youth Talent Connection, a SAG/AFTRA franchised agency in Tustin, California. The agency is owned by Heather Baldwin, one of the many agents that uses Star Search Casting to find new talent.
Log on today to access Star Search Casting's comprehensive database of talent agents and managers as well as helpful information and articles including how to take a great headshot and how to ace an interview with a prospective agent. Do I Need A Stage Name?

Did you know that Nicolas Cage's real name is Nicolas Coppola? That's right. He's the nephew of famous director Francis Ford Coppola, but he changed his name when he began seeking work in Hollywood to prove that he could make it based on his own talent, rather than the merits of his famous family name.
There are lots of other celebrities that modify their real names or use completely different ones. These names are referred to as stage names or professional names. For example, Natalie Portman's real name is actually Natalie Hershlag. Michael J. Fox's real middle initial is 'A'. Alicia Keys' real name is Alicia J. Augello-Cook. Anna Nicole Smith was born Vickie Lynn Marshall while Carmen Electra's real name is Tara Leigh Patrick.
There are lots of reasons that actors, singers, models and dancers adopt stage names however it is not a prerequisite to success. For most, opting to use a stage name is a personal choice. Under some circumstances an actor must change their name due to union rules. For example, the Screen Actors Guild stipulates that no two members may have identical working names. However, this doesn't mean that you necessarily have to change your name. If your name is Leslie Green and upon applying for your S.A.G. card you discover that there's another Leslie Green, you can opt to use your middle initial or middle name rather than changing your entire name (ex. Leslie M. Green or Leslie Marie Green). I have a friend who encountered this dilemma and chose to use her maiden name.
Popular reasons that entertainers choose a stage name or professional name:
If you're considering using a stage name, discuss it with your manager or agent first. If you don't have a manager or agent, feel free to discuss it with others in the industry.
Curious if there are any Star Search Casting members that use stage names or professional names? I can tell you that there are quite a few. Log on to and ask http://www.StarSearchCasting.com experiences using stage names in our community forum.

Launch A Career As A Successful Commercial Actor

While acting in commercials may not get you instant fame, it can be lucrative and it can help get you seen by casting directors and other industry professionals who hold the keys to bigger opportunities. Harvey Silver, one of the actors featured in our Star Search Casting Member Spotlight first got his big break when he booked a Coca-Cola commercial. The commercial was directed by John Singleton who has directed 13 films including Boyz n the Hood and 2 Fast 2 Furious, and produced nine others including Black Snake Moan and Hustle & Flow. Talk about power networking! Harry Silver has been in nearly 30 television shows and films since he booked his first commercial.
If you've been reviewing our casting notices daily, you may have noticed a recent post for a commercial for Bacardi that called for an athletic man, age 18-25, between 5'8 and 6' who was athletic, suave, rough around the edges, yet cleans up well. Very detailed description, isn't it? You may have noticed that film and television casting notices are generally a lot less specific. In comparison, a casting breakdown for a film or television show might call for a male age 18-25, any ethnicity. Or perhaps Caucasian male, age 18-25, attractive.
One of the reasons why commercial breakdowns are more precise is because in commercials, an actor's "look" almost always carries more weight than anything else. While in a two-hour film or a 30-minute sitcom the audience will get a chance to become familiar with a character, in a commercial they only have 30 seconds or less. Therefore it's paramount that actors in commercials must have a look that's instantly likeable and/or that's consistent with the image of the product or brand.
If you're interested in commercial acting, one of the best things you can do to prepare is to study commercials. By becoming more familiar with the types of actors that appear in commercials you'll get a better idea of what casting directors look for when casting commercials. And more importantly, what types of commercials your look is best suited for. In addition to learning more about what types of looks are well suited to commercials, you can also get an idea of what types of behaviors work best as well.
When arriving for a commercial audition, it's imperative that you look the part. For example, if the breakdown calls for a businessman for a cell phone commercial, make sure you come to the audition as if you're headed to the office – preferably clean shaven and in a business suit. For auditions where the breakdown doesn't suggest specific attire, be sure to arrive with a neat, well-groomed appearance and a dazzling smile. Remember, it's key that you're instantly likeable.
Think you know what types of commercials your look is best suited for? Visit http://www.StarSeachCasting.com and review our casting notices today.

Each month we get tons of emails from Star Search Casting members who have used our website to launch careers in the entertainment industry. We love reading their success stories because it makes all of our hard work even more worthwhile. Star Search Casting members from all over the world are landing life-changing roles, getting signed to prominent talent agencies, taking the fashion capitals by storm and connecting with some of the industry's most prominent casting directors, agents, producers and other entertainment industry executives.
In addition to reading success stories, one of my favorite things to do is to highlight Star Search Casting members that are making their mark on the industry. I always find their stories to be inspirational and I hope that you'll be inspired and motivated by their journey as well.
Harvey Silver is a Star Search Casting member who has appeared in nearly 30 films and television shows. You may have seen him on episodes of popular shows such as Beverly Hills, 90210, Sister, Sister, NYPD Blue and The Shield. Additionally due to his record success, he's also appeared on Access Hollywood, Extra and Entertainment Tonight and been featured in The Hollywood Reporter and the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Harvey took acting classes as a teen in Philadelphia where he was born and raised and it wasn't long before he fell in love with the stage. He later attended New York University's prestigious Tisch School of the Arts where he continued to study acting. After NYU, he moved to Los Angeles and began working almost immediately. He made his television debut in a Coca-Cola commercial directed by John Singleton. In addition to his film and television roles, he also landed several theater roles including the lead in American Medea at the Mark Taper Forum.
Harvey often utilizes method acting, a technique in which actors try to replicate real life emotional conditions under which their characters operate – a practice advanced by the Less Strasburg Theater Institute, where Harvey also attended.
Harvey Silver's story is a great example of the level of success you can achieve in the entertainment industry if you apply yourself. We'd like to congratulate Harvey on all of his success and wish him the best in his future endeavors.

How To Secure Your Future On The Stage

If you've ever followed the work of theater directors, you may notice that they often work with many of the same actors repeatedly. Whether you're an actor, dancer, singer or model, it's important to remember that cultivating relationships with decision makers in the entertainment industry is paramount to career longevity. If a successful director takes a liking to you, that could mean steady work for you for years to come.
So how do you make an impression on a director to help solidify your position and success in the industry? Here are a few tips:
- Try to memorize your lines before your first rehearsal. There's no better way to blow a director away than by showing him or her that you've come prepared and ready to work.
- Always be on time (and preferably early.) I know I always stress this and you probably think I sound like a broken record, but in the entertainment industry time is money and there's no such thing as being fashionably late.
- Come to rehearsal prepared to take notes. You can use a pencil to mark up your script or bring an extra notebook. Sometimes it's difficult to remember all of the notes that the director will give, or changes in blocking, so make sure you write them down. And be sure to review these notes often so that they sink in.
- Be courteous of the staff and crew during rehearsal. Unnecessary chatter can be frustrating and distracting to others in the theater, so when you're not rehearsing one of your scenes, stay focused so you'll be ready to tackle your scene when it's your turn.
One of the last rules of thumb is to always take great care of your costume and your props. Most costume directors will require that you leave your costume at the theater, however sometimes actors become absent-minded and may take a costume or prop home with them accidentally. I once had a friend who not only took a part of his costume home (a Starbucks apron) but also promptly lost it. He spent the next day driving to various Starbucks locations trying to buy an apron from one of the baristas. While it may sound like a funny story now - trust me - it was no laughing matter.
Are you ready to use these tips to impress theater directors and ensure a long-lasting, and successful career on the stage? Visit http://www.StarSearchCasting.com today and check out our casting notices for theater auditions in your area and abroad. Good luck!

Scam Watch – Fatal Photo Shoots

In 1992, 21-year old model Kimberly Pandelios told her husband that she was meeting with a photographer. However the man who'd led her to believe he was a photographer was actually a registered sex offender who lured Pandelios into the Angeles National Forest where he sexually assaulted and killed her.
Kimberly was probably a lot like many young, aspiring models. She was beautiful, vibrant and eager to take on the world. She'd had some success modeling swimwear and lingerie when she'd discovered a model-wanted ad in a local weekly newspaper. She had hoped the opportunity would help her make some headway in her career. Instead, she met a tragic end.
Unfortunately, this story is not an uncommon one. And it doesn't just happen to new models. Linda Sobek, a former Raiders cheerleader and Playboy model met a similar fate when she left her home to attend a photo shoot. In her case, the photographer who killed her was at the time a reputable photographer who had actually amassed a small fortune and some fame and who's work had appeared in many automotive magazines.
We often discuss the growing number of Internet scams that constantly target aspiring models, but one Star Search Casting member recently discussed the importance of remaining aware of the dangers that face models in the real world as well. Every day people reach out to aspiring models on the street, in stores, or through newspaper or online classifieds with legitimate offers. However, there are also criminals who use these same methods to lure models with malicious intent.
To avoid becoming the victim of dangerous crime, always remember to:
- Ask for references from photographers, agents or other industry professionals before agreeing to work with them.
- Take a friend or family member with you to photo shoots and meetings with agents, photographers or other industry professionals, especially if you've not worked with them in the past and you have not secured the job through a reputable agency.
- Be cautious of applying to blind ads in newspapers or online. If you choose to apply to these ads, be sure to thoroughly research the agency or photographer that you will be meeting with.
- And last but not least, always go with your instincts. Intuition is one of the most powerful resources you have to protect you from dangerous situations. Therefore don't get involved with a project or an agency if you have a bad feeling about it.

HOLLYWOOD - Since its launch in 1998, Star Search Casting has quickly become the leading casting website in the United States. Moreover, as it's popularity increased among U.S. users, the website soon welcomed a growing number of international users, and now caters to Star Search Casting members based on six continents. In an effort to maintain its commitment to actors, dancers, singers and models in all areas of the world, Star Search Casting has now added the Google Gadget's Translate feature to help Star Search Casting member access casting notices and other resources in 14 languages.
"The number of singers, actors, dancers and models from other countries who use our website is constantly growing," says Jonathan Parker, founder and CEO of Star Search Casting. "We hope that the translation tool will make it easier for users whose first language isn't English to access the information, tools and resources on our website."
Both Google and Star Search Casting are known for providing cutting-edge, innovative web applications and tools for its web visitors. Google's Translate tool helps webmasters cater to multilingual web visitors, without having to maintain multiple multilingual websites. Actors, models, singers and dancers who access the Star Search Casting website can use the tool to translate text in a number of languages including French, German, Japanese, Korean, Italian and Spanish.
By catering to a global base of singers, dancers, actors and models, Star Search Casting helps casting directors and other entertainment industry professionals scout talent all over the world. Additionally, Star Search Casting is opening the doors for performers in the U.S. to seize opportunities in other countries.
"There are exciting opportunities to dance, sing, act and model all across the globe and our website is helping aspiring entertainers open their eyes to a world of possibilities," says Parker. "We've gotten emails from American performers who have landed jobs in Asia, and Asian performers who've landed jobs in the U.S. so there's definitely a global exchange of talent and it's exciting to be apart of it."
