Mr. Leadbetter is the owner of the hotel, where Kylie and Lila work. He is a wealthy man who, as his daughter, doesn’t like to be in the company of the uneducated and “working class” hotel staff. This ensures that his relationship with his staff (Kylie) is very limited and unsatisfactory. However he seems to have an abundance of love for his daughter and is concerned about the way he has spoiled her with money in the past. He is scared that his daughter is loosing her way and will stay financially dependent on him for the rest of her life. This angst has driven him to force Lila to work for his Hotel in a minor capacity to show her what the working life is really like.

Lila is the daughter of a Hotel owner. She is confident in herself and confident about what she wants to do. Her personal appearance is very important to her. As is her personal longing for an outwardly impressive career. Lila places herself in a very “upper class” social circle and tries to minimise contact with the working man/woman. Money has never been a problem for Lila, but seeing she is still dependent on her father this forces her to do his bidding and work as a maid at the hotel.

Kylie is a Hotel maid who is very vulnerable to outside influences and figures of authority. She is slightly delusional about her role in life. In her opinion her job is temporary on her way to fame and glory but her personal burdens of insecurity and her limited intelligence, talent, motivation and nervous attitude towards anything alien or authoritative prevent her from becoming a more respectable part of society. In her job she seems to be largely sheltered from outside influences. Most of her working day Kylie is cut off from human contact as she spends a great deal of time in a broom cupboard smoking and trying to convince herself that in her little world she is her own boss.
